WALLS
Back to topOriginally dry stone walls were used to separate properties and contain livestock and can act as fences or decorative partitions. They are usually between three to six feet in height and can be coped with flat stone, vertical stones or even with vegetation (such as grass or mosses) as seen in some of the pictures below. Various features such as steps, pillars, arches, grottos, ledges and niches can be incorporated into walls as well.
ARCHES
Back to topWhether incorporated into a wall or standing free, dry stone arches give an elegant feel to any space. They make ideal entrances to gardens or backyard patios and are constructed most often using Gothic or Roman styles.
RETAINING WALLS/TERRACES
Back to topWhere a property has a changing elevation, terracing with dry stone retaining walls makes efficient use of the space. The lack of mortar allows for excellent drainage and the thickness and batter of the walls ensures that they never lean or bow. Steps can be incorporated into the walls for patios and walkways. Also dry stone retaining walls make excellent accents for raised gardens.
PILLARS
